Las Vegas Shows - Bette Midler Las Vegas

Bette Midler in Las Vegas
The procession of stars that make the Las Vegas desert oasis home continues to march on. The newest addition to the musical superstars in Las Vegas shows is Bette Midler. One of the most celebrated singers of the past thirty years, the Las Vegas Bette Midler show will be filling the hole left by Celine Dion’s departure at the end of 2007. She will be trading on and off with Elton John, as Caesar Palace shows continue to be some of the hottest tickets in the city.

And much like her counterpart, Elton John, Bette Milder in concert has long been famous for outrageous antics and over the top performances, so it’s only fitting that they will be sharing the bill at the forefront of Caesar Palace shows. Bette Midler Las Vegas will be much like recent Bette Midler concerts, with show stopping numbers, complete with backing band and Midler’s semi-famous backup singers, the Harlettes. Her musicians and dancers have often used Bette Midler concerts as the first step on the stairway to fame – in fact, she will be competing with her former piano player, Barry Manilow, for Las Vegas tourist dollars.

Since gaining fame in the early 70s, Bette Midler tickets have always been announced to great anticipation. And her new home will be no different, though the greater production values and significant theater will run them upwards of $100.

But Bette Midler concerts have never disappointed, and the Las Vegas Bette Midler shows will be no different. Beginning in February 2008, you too can see what Midler can bring to Sin City. Consequent press releases have promised "plenty of girls, gags and guffaws, her incomparable humor, the best song catalogue in American music and her fabulous 'Kiss My Brass' section."

Anyone who has attended Bette Midler concerts in the past will find her new digs at Caesars Palace to be a perfect setting for her untamed performances. Bette Midler Las Vegas shows will run five nights a week – excluding Mondays and Thursdays – at 7:30 pm. Be sure to check out the Caesars Palace seating chart prior to purchasing your tickets.

Bette Midler Biography:

Bette Midler has been no stranger to giant stages – she made her Broadway debut in the original production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” She went on to further popularity in the city in the 70s, as she gained recognition for touring many of New York’s bathhouses, earning her a strong fan base with the burgeoning gay community of the time. She continues to win over new fans each year, and Bette Midler Las Vegas will only add to her significant popularity.

Winner of a special Tony Award in 1974, Midler’s heart is clearly in New York – her Broadway shows and special concerts have generated millions of dollars - but Vegas has long been famous for appropriating other city’s reference points, so she should have no problem adding herself to the famed list of performers in Caesars Palace shows.

Not only a talented singer, Midler has made her way into cinematic history, as her resume includes Oscar nominations for her performances in "For the Boys" and "The Rose." “Wind Beneath My Wings” brought her the 1989 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, her third such award. The list also includes 1980’s Best Pop Vocal Performance Female – for "The Rose” - and 1973’s Best New Artist. Many of the songs found in Bette Midler movies are featured in the Bette Midler in Las Vegas show.

Las Vegas Opening New Hotel and Casino

Las Vegas Eastside Cannery Casino and Hotel
The Las Vegas Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel will open it's doors on the Boulder Strip at 8pm on August 28. The $250 million, 16-story, bronze, saw-toothed, resort tower will feature 300 oversized modern rooms, an array of dining options, 2100 slot machines, and all the usual gaming amenities including a large bingo hall. Rounding out the new resort is over 20,000 sq ft of ballroom/meeting space, 600 sq ft corner window suites with in-room spas and 900 sq ft executive suites on the top floor.

The exterior of the Las Vegas Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel stands out among the skyline of the Boulder Highway area. The most prominent feature of the property is the 16-story bronze hotel tower featuring an exposed structural and decorative element, which is topped off by a saw tooth roofline making it an icon for the Las Vegas Valley. There are an abundance of visual references to the burgeoning industrial era with the use of brick and steel in various aspects, along with cross-braced steel facades and heavy steel open trusses. Murals depicting building amenities in a fun and nostalgic way decorate the outer walls of the property.

The interior design of the Las Vegas Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel is complementary to the exteriors architectural design. Inside, guests are transported to the age of industry. Large open truss ceilings, exposed mechanical and over-scaled detailing is throughout the property. There are elements of the past intermixed with hi-tech. The use of warm inviting earth tones accent the vibrant saturated colors of mustard, orange and avocado.

Within the new 16-story Las Vegas hotel tower, there are 307 guest rooms and suites that showcase floor to ceiling glass windows giving the guests spectacular views of the mountains and the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip. The oversized 450 square foot guest room décor and furnishings are reminiscent of the ongoing industrial theme of the property, but have a fresh 21st Century feel with wide screen plasma televisions in every room. Guests who book the corner window suites are treated to an exceptional view while soaking in their in-room spas in their 600 square foot surroundings. Guests who book one of the five executive suites on the top floor are able to enjoy all the amenities in their 900 square foot surroundings.

For meeting planners, the Las Vegas Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel has 20,000 square feet of ballroom and meeting space to service a variety of meeting and convention needs. The main ballroom is 18,000 square feet and can be divided into five rooms. There are two additional meeting rooms as well as two boardrooms off of the main ballroom.

Throughout the new Las Vegas casino and hotel, there are amenities similar to those of the Cannery Casino & Hotel but with a twist. The familiar Pinups Bar is again featured in the new project but the depictions of the 1950's glamour girls have made way to focus on the saucy 1960's pop art beauties with a new space age op art look. The zigzag ceiling soffit murals depict life in the 1960's with glimpses into the ever-changing future from imagery of man entering outer space to families riding futuristic rockets. The Eastside Cannery artwork celebrates the evolution of industry and embraces the optimism of the ever-changing future.

Also on property are six restaurants including one that sits on the top floor of the hotel tower, four bars and an upscale live entertainment lounge.

Summer is basketball season in Las Vegas Nevada

Las Vegas Nevada Basketball
Las Vegas news and information. A guy walked by the high-roller lounge at Wynn the other night, with his four kids in tow, and stopped in his tracks when he saw who was playing blackjack at the $500-minimum table. “Look,” said the man, peeking in, “that’s Jason Kidd.”
The veteran NBA guard and U.S. national team spark, who has made more than $136 million in his career, sat just inside the parlor, to the left, with his back to the Las Vegas Nevada casino floor.
Every few seconds, Kidd shot a glance to his left or right, curious about who might be spying on him. Three guys at a bar looked at Kidd and watched Team USA forward Carmelo Anthony walk by with a mini-posse.
“There are a lot of other places they could have gone to practice,” said one of the bar patrons. “I like college kids playing in the Olympics. They appreciate it. I don’t think these guys appreciate it.”
Occasionally, pockets of two, three and four Las Vegas kids strolled by. They wore basketball shorts almost to their ankles and T-shirts from their hometowns or touting their favorite teams.
Forget that the Wynn has an age restriction. Minors must be accompanied by an adult, a sign near parking garage reads. These kids were playing in the three Under-17 summer prep tournaments being staged all over town, but they’ve already learned that certain rules do not apply to them.
If they play their cards right, maybe they, too, soon will be ogled by the public as they play high-stakes blackjack. Those scenes played out all over town over the past 2 1/2 weeks, when a confluence of events turned Las Vegas into the epicenter of basketball.
The senses were overwhelmed by plaid shorts and fans who shouldn’t wearing basketball jerseys, by nachos and chicken fingers, and by wild-eyed, screaming parents.
Prep prospect Shawn Kemp Jr., wearing braces and almost whispering, talked matter-of-factly about overcoming playing with the burden of that name.
Arsaland Kamazi, who has an Energizer-bunny motor and an infectious laugh, must disarm peers at his North Carolina high school when they query him about Iran. He landed in the States five months ago and is an impressive player and person.
Top recruit Derrick Favors, who mentioned only about 20 schools when asked about his “list,” said he and his teammates mostly played video games at their South Point headquarters during their down time.
At the NBA Summer League, O.J. Mayo, Kevin Love and Jerryd Bayless fared well, but only 30 percent of the players from those 21 teams will draw NBA paychecks this season. The reality of those 10 days in Las Vegas was that more than 400 scouts, agents, general managers and coaches from Europe, Asia and South America were there to stock their teams.
Sinking a baseline jumper or having a good game — or not — determined whether someone would get a rich contract in Russia or leftovers for a second-division squad in Argentina. Former UNLV swingman Romel Beck played in Italy last season and might go to Croatia or Russia this season. “All it takes is one game to catch someone’s eye,” he said. “If you come out here and play well, you could set yourself up with the possibility of making a lot of money.”
Team USA stayed at the Wynn and trained at Las Vegas Valley High, a quaint venue for such a prestigious team preparing for the Olympics in China. But Michael Redd beamed about the high school’s amenities.
All of the Americans raved about Las Vegas Nevada, where they practiced for a total of 87 days the previous two summers.
The U.S. went 10-0, winning by an average score of 117-77, at the FIBA Americas tournament a year ago and thrashed Canada, 120-65, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Vegas on Friday night in its last Olympic tuneup on home soil.
Dwyane Wade received massages, rested and ate at fine restaurants. He shuffled down to the Wynn blackjack tables every other day to play for about an hour. At the $15 tables? “Yeah, something like that,” said Wade, smiling. “Nothing like Charles Barkley. I’ll leave it at that.”
He didn’t mingle at the Ferrari dealership with the red F430, worth about $175,000, at its entrance. Wade has made more than $25 million from the Miami Heat over the past five years. “Not going in there,” he said. “Can’t afford one of them cars.”
Derrick Rose, on the select team that scrimmaged against Team USA, bought a little black leather wallet, bearing Ferrari’s famous horse logo, for $130. Nice guy, said a clerk. Chris Paul raved about “O” at Bellagio. He walked the Strip with his girlfriend, dined with her and his parents, rested and played “a little” blackjack. “I love it here,” he said. “I come to Las Vegas all the time. I love to get away from it all.” The young bucks seem just as savvy about the city of Las Vegas.
Kenny Boynton, the standout guard from Florida whose team stayed at Circus Circus and won the Reebok title, came to Las Vegas for a sixth consecutive summer. As a 12-year-old, against older and bigger foes, he pelted 45 points on a team from Oregon. He has an unconscious shooting range and the Globetrotters would covet his dribbling skills. He spent the final seconds of Sunday’s championship game at Foothill High making a poor defender look silly by dribbling around his back and through his legs, while whirling like a dervish. “But I want people who read this to know that I showed I could play defense, that I’m not just a shooting guard,” Boynton said. “And I’m a winner.”

High fuel prices put pinch on Nevada brothels

Las Vegas Brothels
Las Vegas Travel News — Rising fuel prices are putting a pinch on the world's oldest profession. Las Vegas Nevada brothels that cater to long-haul truckers are offering gas cards and other promotions after seeing business decline as much as 25 percent from a year ago, industry officials said.
Geoffrey Arnold, president of the Nevada Brothel Owners' Association, said truckers account for up to 75 percent of business at the Las Vegas and Nevada's rural brothels along Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 95.
He said business is down about 19 percent at his two northern Nevada brothels along I-80: Donna's Ranch in Wells and Donna's Battle Mountain Ranch.
"We're being affected by the economy like everybody else," Arnold said. "Times are tougher ... and truckers have less money to spend. They're not high-rollers anymore."
Diesel fuel costs roughly $4.70 a gallon, up 67.5 percent from a year ago, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Of Nevada's 28 legal brothels, 16 are located in rural areas that are being hurt by truckers' higher diesel costs, Arnold said. Whorehouses closer to Reno and Las Vegas, which rely more on tourists and conventioneers, say business is up this year.
In response to a 5 percent drop in business, the Shady Lady Ranch along U.S. 95 about 150 miles north of Las Vegas plans to offer $50 gas cards to clients who spend $300 and $100 gas cards to those who spend $500.
The brothel also offers special monthly discounts, including an offer of 45 minutes of services for $175 instead of the usual rate of $200.
"Anything that has to do with discretionary income is down," owner Bobbi Davis said. "Instead of spending $500 out here, they might only spend $300. I see it every time they raise gas prices."
Under a promotion under way at the Moonlite BunnyRanch near Carson City, the first 100 customers who arrive with government stimulus checks receive twice the services for the same regular price.
"We're calling it double your stimulus," said BunnyRanch owner Dennis Hof. "The brothel industry is having to get more creative just like all consumer products in America. Everybody has got to deal, and we're doing the same thing."
Sue's Fantasy Club in Elko Nevada doesn't need to extend any promotions because it doesn't rely on truckers, said the brothel's manager, who would identify herself only as Victoria.
Business is up from last year because of a booming local Las Vegas Nevada economy driven by mining and rising gold prices, she said.
"We would be hurting, too, if we had to depend on truckers," she said.
Hardest hit are independent truckers, who must pay for their own fuel, said George Flint, a lobbyist for the brothel owners' association.
"So there goes your disposable income to have a little fun," Flint said.
Since January, the number of long-haul trucks based in Nevada has dropped by 4,100, or 12 percent, said Paul Eons of the Nevada Motor Transport Association.
Arnold predicted the industry would weather the slowdown.
"The customers won't be spending as much, but the brothels will still be there," he said. "After food, the most important activity, at least for men, is sex. Sex is not going away."
The downturn also has affected las Vegas Nevada brothels by leading to an increase in the number of women seeking jobs as legal prostitutes, Arnold added.
As business for escort services and strip clubs goes flat, "more women are interested in joining the (brothel) industry," he said.
Nevada is the nation's only state that allows brothels. Prostitution is legal in 10 of Nevada's 17 counties, but it's illegal in the Reno and Las Vegas metropolitan areas.

Las Vegas Power Outage

The power went out at four Las Vegas hotels yesterday and dozens of hotel guests were stuck in elevators for more than an hour. The Clark County Fire Department said that Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur and Four Seasons Hotel had their power go out for 90 minutes when a transformer blew nearby. There were also water outages this morning at the Las Vegas Hilton, Riviera and Turnberry Towers.

Monday, January 21, 2008

Las Vegas Travel News. Saturday, the much-ballyhooed Nevada caucuses for the Democratic Presidential nomination took place, and much of the preceding political ruckus and infighting turned out to be misplaced. The nine casinos which had been selected to host caucuses to ease voting difficulties for casino workers did their best to keep the process organized and simple, and despite a Culinary Workers' Union endorsement of Barack Obama, both the LasVegas Strip polling locations and the state as a whole went for Hillary Clinton. There had been much debate over the new system used to allow casino employees the opportunity to register their opinions in the caucuses by attempting to make the locations convenient to workers who were on-duty during the Saturday primary, much of it from Clinton supporters who proclaimed the plan would significantly favor Obama. However, many of the hotel employees seemed to disregard the union's recommendation and sided with Clinton, who carried seven of the nine casino caucuses. Experience was often cited as a major reason voters liked Clinton, a curious response unless being married to the President is considered valuable in the way that being a state governor, or a longer time in the Senate, might be.Interestingly, when questioned about the process of allowing employees at work a break to participate, senior vice president of MGM Mirage Alan Feldman said, "We thought it was a terrific opportunity to allow the employees to participate... We did have to put limits on it, though. If every single server in the buffet all said they wanted to go, clearly you'd have to say no to someone."Who decided which workers would be permitted to leave and which would continue their duties was not clear, nor was the thinking that led to excluding some while benefitting others.Clinton, whose representatives had approved the casino caucuses this summer when they were suggested, had recently had vocal supporters decry the process, and the state teachers' union sued unsucessfully to block the casinos from participating. Now that the results have returned favorably for her, Clinton can be expected to voice approval of the format; there has clearly been a pattern of behavior by the Clinton camp indicating that whatever method gives her victory is the one it will pursue, disregarding any disenfranchisement of opposition.
